Data Loss

Data Loss

For an individual it can be really frustrating but for a business it can be down right devastating.

Data loss can refer to when you data has either been corrupted or deleted. Many ways this can happen but the most common is hardware failure. Other ways are through ransomware, malware, viruses or rogue employee.

If you have lost Data before then you already know importance of backups. So some easy steps to help you along the way.

1. Backup regularly. – if you are a business then you should have at least one backup happening daily to insure your data is recoverable.

2. Test your backups – a backup is only as good as it’s last successful completion. You need to periodically go and restore a file to a different location to make sure your backups are sound.

3. Patches and Updates – keeping up to date with the latest patches and updates for your software is important. They can fix flaws in the system that may cause data loss as well as security risks.

4. Upgrades. – It’s very important to understand that like everything in this world, your computer has a life span as well. The older the systems becomes the more unstable they can become. I advise businesses to put their work systems on a 4 – 5 year cycle. You can go as low as 3 years but most business systems should get you that 4 – 5 year life cycle.
